The United Nations has warned against the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the Israeli-blockaded Gaza Strip.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), the main entity responsible for providing services to Palestinian refugees, announced Tuesday that it would be cutting 30,000 workers from its payroll due to a $36 million deficit. Refugees and UNRWA workers have responded to the announcement in protest, shutting down all UNRWA offices and programs except clinics and schools Wednesday and Thursday.

Mahmoud Abbas told Agence France-Presse Sunday that peace talks with Israel will continue for the full nine months "regardless of what happens on the ground," and called for "an international inquiry to determine who was responsible" for the death of Yasser Arafat after reports released earlier this month indicate that the former Palestinian leader was indeed poisoned.
