Egypt invests US$9 million to protect High Dam

An Egyptian newspaper reported on Tuesday that the government is building a security bunker in front of the High Dam on the Nile River to protect it from any attempts to destroy it. The Dam is located near the city of Aswan. The newspaper quoted an official at the Ministry of water resources and irrigation as saying that the works to lay the line of steel fortifications began recently in order to prevent any attempt to dispatch explosives across the river to blow up the dam, which is considered the most important facility in Egypt.
The official pointed out that the ministry will complete the construction of the fortifications next year.
He did not give further details but said the project, which cost about 40 million pounds (some US$ 9 million) will not affect the stability of the dam.
It should be mentioned that the High Dam was constructed between 1960 and 1970.
