Bring on the summer: Abu Dhabi to host 3-month long summer culture & arts season
Blockbuster international theatre, ballet, comedy and illusionist shows, regional film premieres, World Cup extravaganzas and activities in malls are among the many attractions that await residents and tourists during the three-month Abu Dhabi Summer Season that starts from June 5.
“It will be an unforgettable summer season for visitors and residents who choose to spend their summers here. We aim to make Abu Dhabi a year-long destination for tourists. It is the first time you would see such a wide range of events and the season would only grow in the coming years,” said Sultan Al Dhaheri, Acting Director of the Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority (TCA-Abu Dhabi).
“People can enjoy various activities, live shows, concerts throughout the emirate, including Adnec, Yas Island and in 15 participating malls,” Al Dhaheri told XPRESS.
Al Dhaheri said they are focusing on attracting a large number of tourists particularly from the GCC and India through special promotions.
The Summer Season that ends August 31 will kick off with the Royal Moscow Ballet and two lead sololists from the Bolshoi Ballet performing Cinderella at Adnec on June 6.
From June 12 till July 13, the du Forum, Yas Island, will be transformed into the emirate’s largest FIFA World Cup viewing venue. Every FIFA World Cup match will be shown on a giant 6 x 4 metre LED screen, with additional mega screens around the venue and the viewing area that can accommodate up to 800 people at a time. “We have special arrangements to ensure visitors can watch the matches throughout, even when they extend beyond midnight. Besides, there would be corporate hospitality for iftar as it would be Ramadan,” said Alexis Dijksterhius from Flash Entertainment.
Throughout the season, artists from across the Middle East, Russia and USA will perform shows, concerts, comedy nights and other events, while shoppers can look forward to attractive deals in 15 malls.
Movie buffs can look forward to a Middle East premiere of an international movie, while other events include live shows for children, comedy shows, performances by Arab stars, illusionists and also musical theatre.
In August, internationally acclaimed Pilobolus Dance Theatre will host the Shadowland show at Adnec. The show, organised by The Alchemy Project-Entertainment, combines shadow theatre with dance, circus and concert and starts August 8.
A multiple-award winning circus theatrical La Verita also begins August 21 at Adnec. The contemporary circus theatrical – written and directed by Daniele Finzi Pasca – the brains behind Cirque du Soleil’s Corteo, features a gigantic, original backdrop created in New York in 1944 by Spanish surrealist painter Salvador Dali. La Verità (The Truth) was held during the closing ceremony at Sochi Olympics and features 13 acrobats who will dance, juggle, play instruments, sing and clown it up.
“It is a vibrant explosion of colour, beauty, offbeat humour and impossible balancing acts which channel Dali’s surrealist vision,” said Sia.S.Far, CFO and managing partner, Alchemy Project.
