Canadian Imam to Announce Fatwa Against Honor Killings

After Al Bawba covered some of the craziest fatwas to come out in 2011, it's nice to see a fatwa that is related to something useful and timely. One Canadian imam uses his religious authority for good by deciding to issue a fatwa against honor killings in a public speech.

"'Within the Muslim community, there are a few clergy people who misinterpret the Qur’an and say it is OK to beat a wife,' Soharwardy said. 'That kind of mentality has to be changed, and has to be confronted.'"

It seems that life on paper and life in practice are two very different things. This Lebanese blogger resents the fact that his female friend won't complain to human resources about her colleague who is obviously sexually harassing her. Her reasoning is that this will cause unwanted attention, disputes and gossip. What do you reckon? Is there a scarlet letter attached to sexual harassment in the work place?

"Sexual harassment is not a joke, and ignoring it will not make it go away. I say report the abusers, teach them a lesson, even if it gets them fired. They should've known better than to be misogynist pigs. Given the lack of punitive laws in Lebanon, they'd be getting off easy."

Jordanian blogger Ali is fed up of all the apathy directed towards the situation in Syria. So he is calling out for people to show their support online whether on Twitter or other social networking means.
