Mother's Spring: How About Making it a Women's Spring?

Al Bawaba previously reported on the female student revolution. In spite of causing one death and several injured, the whole issue was hushed over. Apparently, there is more than meets the eye to this small female uprising, as the issue is more about gender attitudes than inept administrative practices.

"On a quiet Saturday morning, while browsing the web for the day’s news, a story from Saudi Arabia caught my attention: thousands of female university students at the King Khalid University in the southern city of Abha were reported protesting against against poor on-campus sanitary services."

This Saudi blogger highlights some very frightening global statistics about women, set to beautiful paintings. If they're going to tell you something horrible, they might as well do it with a beautiful backdrop.

"600 women were raped everyday in 2006 in the USA."

Stealing some numbers from the previous blog entry, if women make up 70% of the world's poor and the majority of the labor force, then why are they not being involved in a revolution that holds so much importance to them? This blogger highlights an article discussing the perils in store for the women of the Arab Spring.

"I often wondered if the turmoil sweeping our region for the past 14 months can rightly be dubbed an 'Arab Spring.' In places, it is more of an 'Arab nightmare' begun in winter and still trying to shake off the snow."

Following up on the rotten meat issue in Lebanon, it seems that it takes a politician's wife getting food poisoning for the government to do anything about the issue.

"It appears, the incident that sparked the issue of food safety was the poisoning of Randa Berri, wife of Speaker Nabih Berri during the Independence Day ceremony. This led Speaker Nabih Berri to interrupt his dinner and leave Baabda palace."
