Nigel Hawthorn, VP EMEA Marketing, Blue Coat Systems
Blue Coat Systems, a leading provider of Web security and WAN optimization solutions, today announced version 6.2 of its SGOS operating software for its Blue Coat MACH5 WAN Optimization solution and two new appliance models that, together, define “the next generation” of WAN optimization.
“The requirements for WAN optimization are evolving, as businesses begin to embrace Web or cloud-based applications, grapple with enterprise video initiatives and manage skyrocketing amounts of recreational Web content on costly, capacity-limited links to branch offices,” said Nigel Hawthorn, VP EMEA Marketing at Blue Coat Systems. “Blue Coat products address the traditional WAN optimization challenges brought about by data center consolidation and now deliver the next generation of WAN optimization to accelerate cloud-based initiatives.”
Defining Next Generation WAN Optimization
WAN optimization vendors, including Blue Coat, traditionally deliver value to consolidated IT environments by accelerating remote file access, email, storage and enterprise applications between branch offices and corporate datacenters. With the SGOS software 6.2 release, the Blue Coat® MACH5 WAN Optimization solution improves these capabilities by enhancing email optimization, adding more value reporting and driving higher scalability datacenter appliances. Blue Coat also is defining the next generation of WAN optimization by addressing the demands of cloud-based applications and services, the proliferation of Web video, the transition to IPv6 and the realities of changing applications and networks.
Adding Public Cloud SaaS Optimization to Traditional WAN Optimization
Traditional WAN optimization solutions have been unable to optimize applications based in the public cloud. The new Blue Coat CloudCaching Engine in SGOS 6.2 breaks this barrier by using a “one-sided” or asymmetric acceleration technology that accelerates and optimizes cloud-delivered Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) applications without requiring a WAN optimization device in the cloud provider’s infrastructure. The CloudCaching Engine uses an enhancement of Blue Coat’s pioneering content caching technology that is specifically designed to accelerate and optimize Web applications, large video files and dynamic Web 2.0 content. For further information on Blue Coat’s new public cloud optimization solution, see the additional press release issued by the company today.
Enhancements to Optimized Video Delivery for Minimizing Video “Cost”
As an optional feature, SGOS 6.2 also provides video caching for native on-demand Adobe Flash content using the RTMP protocol to enable enterprises to successfully deliver distributed video initiatives without bandwidth upgrades and to prevent video floods from overtaking mission-critical applications. Blue Coat MACH5 WAN Optimization solutions include a full set technologies for Optimized Video Delivery of on-demand and live streaming Web video from the Internet or a source internal to a company.
Enhanced Email Optimization
SGOS 6.2 also contains features for encrypted MAPI and support for Exchange 2010 to provide additional options for accelerating access to centralized corporate email while reducing the amount of bandwidth consumed. Email attachments, which are often slow to retrieve, also benefit from dramatic speed improvements and bandwidth reduction.
Blue Coat has added a new style of automated, easy-to-use report generation in SGOS 6.2 that visually demonstrates the benefits of a WAN optimization deployment in an intuitive and compelling fashion. These reports help customers ascertain their return on investment and provide insight for network and application planning. They provide an “at a glance” view of WAN traffic and overall bandwidth savings and consumption.
New High Performance Data Center Appliance
Blue Coat also announced a new MACH5 WAN Optimization appliance, the 9000-40, that provides a gigabit of throughput for WAN optimization deployments in large data centers. This appliance supports high levels of traffic from large numbers of users in multiple branch offices accessing applications, files and email in traditional data centers.
New Virtual Appliances for Cloud Data Centers
Blue Coat also announced a high capacity version of its virtual appliance for private cloud data centers where symmetric optimization is possible. This new Cloud MACH5 Virtual Appliance scales to 45 Megabits per second (Mbps) for private cloud and Infrastructure-as-a-Service installations.
Blue Coat provides a comprehensive approach to WAN optimization by addressing a full range of challenges and opportunities needed to enrich the effectiveness of employees in branch offices, accelerate business processes, improve collaboration and decision making, and further embrace the realities and cost effectiveness of Internet-based IT infrastructure.
SGOS 6.2 is available immediately. New customers will get the software with their appliance purchase, and existing customers with a service contract can upgrade without change. The new native Flash caching feature requires an additional license.
The model 9000-40 MACH5 WAN Optimization appliance is available starting May 30, 2011. The new MACH5 Cloud Virtual Appliance is available June 30, 2011.
