Bahraini businesswomen make their mark
A Bahraini woman has been registered for the first time as a businesswoman on an official documents, media reports said last Thursday.
Fatima Jawad profession on her national identity card read businesswoman, newspapers said.
Until now, women who wanted their profession listed on their identity cards were listed as businessmen.
The change is a victory for Bahraini women who like women throughout the Gulf are moving toward more freedoms.
In May, Bahraini Prime Minister Khalifa Bin Salman Al Khalifa said women would be able to sit on the country's appointed consultative council later this year.
In another first for Gulf women, Saudi Arabia announced in August that women would be able to attend horse races.
Stands would be reserved for women in Saudi Arabia's Al-Janadriya track, which is scheduled to open next year.
Saudi Authorities also said women will soon be able to have their own identity cards, instead of being included in their husband's or father's registration papers. – (Albawaba-MEBG)
