Egypt population estimated at 66.5 million
Chief of the Egyptian statistics bureau, Ehab Alawy, disclosed that the local population stood at 66,552,000 at January-end, reported Al-Ahram newspaper. This figure includes 64,652,000 people presently residing in Egypt as well as 1,900,000 expatriate Egyptian workers.
According to Alawy, the indigenous population grew by 1,346,000 people between January and December 2000. This figure reflects an annual population growth rate of 2.1 percent. Specifically, there are 113,000 people born in Egypt every month, 3,679 people every day, and a new Egyptian birth every 23 seconds.
Alawy commented that a negative result of Egypt’s high population growth rate was the country’s increasing wheat consumption. Egypt consumes 10.8 million tons of wheat per annum. — (MENA Report)
