European Commissioner Nielson pledges a further €6.2 million for Iran earthquake victims
European Commissioner Poul Nielson on visit to Iran announced a further €6.2 million for Bam earthquake victims.
The European Commission (EC) has adopted a €6.2 million humanitarian aid decision for the population of Bam in south-eastern Iran affected by the tragic earthquake on December 26, 2003. This latest decision will help continued efforts to meet the most urgent needs of the victims, and will focus on health care, hygiene, sanitation, and psycho-social support. The funds are managed by the Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO).
According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the Bam earthquake led to the death of 41,000 people. It left 30,000 people injured and about 45,000 homeless in the area whose population before the earthquake was estimated at 210,000 people. Some 25,000 buildings have been destroyed. — (menareport.com)
