German Wintershall looking for oil in Libyan oasis
Libya’s National Geophysical Company (Nageco) has carried out a 3D seismology survey for German-based oil firm Wintershall Libya (WILI) in the Jakhira oasis. Nageco’s vibroseismic heavy vehicles have surveyed a 243 square kilometer desert region for oil deposits by grid segments.
The seismic data processing is being carried out at WesternGeco in London. Wintershall´s geo-physicians will then analyze the data. “If the results are promising, we can start in mid-2003 with the first drilling underneath the oasis,” stated Uwe Salge, head of WILI exploration and reservoir development division.
After ten years of negotiations, WILI had attained in late 2002 an approval from the residents of the Jakhira oasis to carry out seismic examinations. Wintershall possesses a government concession to search for mineral resources in the region. The company has been producing oil in Libya since 1976. — (menareport.com)
