Iran is planning to block access to Google in Iran as plans for a national intranet take shape

Iran has reportedly said that it will block access to Google and Gmail in the wake of protests against the anti-Islam film that has sparked off outrage across the Muslim world.

"Google and Gmail will be filtered throughout the country until further notice," said Abdolsamad Khoramabadi, an Iranian official with the state-run body in charge of online censorship and computer crimes.

According to the state-run media, there was no indication as to whether the filtering would be temporary or permanent.

Khoramabadi claimed the decision was taken after Iranians pressed the authorities to filter the sites because of links to the film named 'Innocence of Muslims,' the Guardian reports.

Iran's state-run media, that broke the news, said the move was in reaction to YouTube's refusal to take down the anti-Islam film.

According to the report, some citizens said Google was still accessible, but some said they could not access their Gmail accounts as service providers appeared to have blocked the service.
