Lebanese government to announce winner of dam construction tender on Feb. 12
Lebanon’s Ministry of Energy and Water will announce the winner of a tender on Thursday February 12, 2004, for the construction of two water dams. The project is valued at $66 million, according to Blominvest.
The initial phase of construction will establish the Orontos Dam, which will have a reservoir capacity of 27 million cubic meters. The subsequent phase will see the construction of a second dam in the Hermel area with a 37 million cubic meter storage capacity.
Despite the availability of water resources in Lebanon, the water supply and wastewater sector does not produce satisfactory services for the majority of the population. Close to half of all water produced is unaccounted for because of losses and billing inefficiencies, while overflowing wastewater collection systems cause severe sanitary conditions and taint surface and groundwater resources. — (menareport.com)
