Omran, the government’s tourism development and investment arm, today announced that plans were ahead of schedule for delivering the first phase of construction for the Olympic village that will host the games and athletes of the 2nd Asian Beach Games in 2010. The project is being built on behalf of the Ministry of Sports Affairs and the Oman Olympic Committee.
Carillion Alawi, the appointed building contractor responsible for the delivering the platform works, has been working on the site for the past four months and is currently 8 days ahead of schedule. Construction of the platform and the bulk earthworks, including levelling, filling and compaction, are currently taking place and are already 48% complete.
Mr Wael Al Lawati, Chief Executive Officer - Omran, said: “Implementation of phase one is gong ahead at a very impressive rate, and we anticipate equal success with other phases. Our aim is for zero harm with respect to our Health, Safety and Environmental Standard (HSE) and we are very proud that so far we have maintained a perfect record. Other elements of work will start soon and will require close monitoring.”
The Olympic village will be located in a picturesque location near the coastal town of Mussanah, an hour’s drive from Muscat. The legacy provided by hosting the Asian Beach Games will include world-class sporting facilities, one 3-star hotel, and meeting and conference facilities that will act as a magnet for future luxury developments.
The Asian Beach Games were established by the Olympic Council of Asia and are held every two years. The overarching aim is to strengthen relations and understanding between participating Asian nations in a friendly competitive environment. The inaugural event will be held in Bali, Indonesia next month from 18-26 October 2008.
