The 2012 Global Financial Markets Forum’s (GFMF) agenda and renowned speakers will offer insightful analysis and discussions on critical geopolitical issues ranging from “Arab Spring” to economic recovery in the US and Europe as well as vital investment opportunities in the region.
The Forum, organised by the National Bank of Abu Dhabi (NBAD) kicks off February 29 and concludes March 1 with an impressive list of prominent speakers and important Gulf decision-makers.
“Certainly this year poses many questions and also offers much opportunities; therefore, we have arranged 2012 Global Financial Markets Forum to address the critical issues of the year,” says Mahmood Al Aradi, the Senior General Manager of NBAD’s Financial Markets Division. “We have invited central bankers and investors from across many sectors to share their expertise and experience, and to facilitate lively discussions and debates.”
This year, NBAD invitees include Paul Volcker, former chairman of the US Federal Reserve System and economic advisor to President Barak Obama; and Axel Weber, president of Deutsche Bundesbank, the German Central Bank, and a member of European Central Bank Governing Council.
“The global economy is grappling with solemn monetary and debt challenges as well as the question of how much regulations are needed. So we arranged for prominent central bankers to address these issues,” Mr. Al Aradi says.
Mr. Volcker’s keynote address on February 29 is titled: “The Future of Global Financial Markets and the Impact of the Volcker Rule.” Mr. Weber’s keynote address, to be delivered on the second day of the GFMF, is titled “Eurozone Challenges and Opportunities: The Central Banker.”
During the first day of the Forum key Gulf investors, economists and decision-makers will participate in presentations titled “Institutional Investor Roundtable: Investment and Asset Allocation Trends,” “Market Fundamentals: Opportunities in MENA,” “The Commodities Debate,” and a presentation by James Hogan, chief executive officer of Etihad Airways, titled “The Role of Etihad Airways in the Development of Abu Dhabi Economy.”
GFMF continues on March 1st focusing on ongoing developments in Europe and MENA.
After Mr. Weber’s keynote address, David McWilliams, an economist, broadcaster and author, will speak about challenges and opportunities in the Eurozone.
Other discussions on the final day of GFMF are “Geopolitics: The New Shape of MENA;” “Geopolitics, Evolving Power Paradigms and their impact on Global Financial Markets;” and “Alternative Investments: Are Supersized Returns Still Realistic in Today’s New Economy.” Michael Tomalin, the Group Chief Executive of NBAD, will speak on “UAE Market Fundamentals.”
“The annual Global Financial Markets Forum, which began in 2009, has brought to Abu Dhabi newsmakers and individuals with profound insight into the markets and economy. Our aim is to provide the Forum’s attendees a comprehensive and valuable medium for learning. Moreover NBAD continues to position GFMF as a medium to raise Abu Dhabi’s profile as a global hub for commerce,” says Sameh Abdulla Al Qubaisi, the General Manager of Institutional and Corporate Coverage Group at NBAD’s Financial Markets Division.
Last year’s GFMF attracted 700 delegates from across many countries, including such notable speakers as Dr. Nassim Nicholas Taleb, the author of “The Black Swan;” and author, academic and economic commentator Jim Rogers.
Each year’s GFMF is unique and adds on the success of the year before. This year, organisers assemble speakers and panels who will discuss the impact of Euro’s challenges and last year’s regional political developments.
GFMF also offers the Investor Presentation sessions, a programme introduced to the region by NBAD last year during 2011 GFMF.
