Emirates Environmental Group
The Can Collection Day is scheduled to be held across all 7 Emirates on Thursday the 27th of February, 2014.
Mrs. Habiba Al Marashi, Chairperson of Emirates Environmental Group, stated that this year’s campaign aims to reach the target of 27 thousand kilograms of aluminum cans collected for recycling. On the Can Collection Day, there will be special sites allocated throughout the country for delivering the cans in order to facilitate the recycling process.
She added that the Can Collection Day will be held in coordination with the municipalities of the various Emirates involved and in support of the relevant government agencies. Emirates Environmental Group is also looking forward to larger participation and support from the private sector this year.
The Can Collection Campaign was the first awareness action program initiated by the EEG in 1997 and has been going strong for the past 17 years now. The campaign has set a benchmark across the UAE as an initiative that allows the local community to actively express their commitment and concerns regarding the protection of the environment, while giving a helping hand towards working on environmental challenges.
Mrs. Habiba Al Marashi explained that Emirates Environmental Group has managed to collect 25,426 kilograms of aluminum cans in the past year, exceeding the target set for 2013. Since its inception, this campaign has gained tremendous support from all sectors of the society; be it government, private sector, academic institutions or individuals and families. As a result of this, EEG has successfully collected a total of 199,493 kilograms of aluminum cans thus far, resulting in the mitigation of 2,995 metric tons of CO2 and the saving of 4,843 m3 of landfill space, an area equivalent to the size of almost two Olympic sized swimming pools.
