One of the four historical buildings in the Msheireb Downtown development
Msheireb Properties announced today that it has appointed a specialised team headed by company architects and leading local and international experts to oversee the restoration and preservation of four historical buildings in the Msheireb Downtown development. The restoration and preservation of these properties dating from the first decade of the last century underscores Msheireb Properties’ commitment to preserve Qatari culture and heritage, in line with Qatar’s National Vision 2030.
The assigned team will work on the restoration of four historic heritage houses that will transform the Heritage Quarter and create an important cultural destination within the development. The four houses that will be restored are the Jalmoud House, Company House, Mohamed Bin Jassim House and Al Radwani House. These historic structures will become cultural centres, museums and exhibition buildings.
In addition to the cultural buildings, the team will also undertake the task of carefully dismantling a heritage house of particular historic value and reconstruct it on another location within the Heritage Quarter.
Located next to the Msheireb’s Cultural Forum, the transformed Heritage Quarter will be a landmark project for the development that also complements and links the new downtown with Souk Waqif, one of the oldest souks in Doha, and other cultural facilities within the Msheireb Downtown project.
Eng. Issa M. Al Mohannadi, CEO of Msheireb Properties, said “Msheireb Properties looks to the past to build a better future. That is why it is vital to preserve these houses, which offer rare glimpses into our history. The restoration of these houses will conserve some of the last remaining traditional and historic buildings in the city centre. It cements our belief that as the nation grows and transforms, Qatar’s culture and traditions will be preserved throughout the development process. We believe this must not be forgotten and moreover, it is precisely these authentic vestiges of our history that are essential to the downtown experience.”
Msheireb Properties is dedicated to leading an urban and sustainable development agenda for Qatar. Through Msheireb Downtown, a US$5.5 billion project, the company is realising a new architectural language through building the world's first sustainable downtown regeneration project, in a 31 hectares (76 acres) historical site of downtown Doha.
The project aims to transform the old commercial and business district into the vibrant, cohesive and culturally active city centre. The unique mixed-use project utilises age-old principles of design and urban planning to create a pedestrian neighbourhood, minimising congestion and encouraging a community feel distinct to Qatari contemporary culture.
