The Sharjah Museums Department (SMD), has just finalized preparations for four workshops set to cover heritage, science and the arts to be held in celebration of International Museum Day. In connection with the slogan “Museum collections…make connections”, the workshops will be held at Sahara Shopping Mall in Sharjah from 19 to 21 May 2014 at Sahara Shopping Mall and from 22 to 24 May 2014 at Arabian Center under the supervision of the Interpretation and Education Department at SMD.
In a continued effort to make the museums’ collections accessible and relevant to the public, high-traffic areas such as major shopping malls have been chosen by the Sharjah Museums Department as focal points for recognizing International Museum Day 2014 .
Sharjah Heritage Museum will facilitate the first workshop titled “Decorate your Notebook” and showcasing local textiles and beautiful costumes that are part of the Emirati collective memory. The workshop will be conducted by education specialists geared towards families, children and shoppers with an interest in fashion and history. Participants will be invited to create textile-inspired designs to adorn notebooks. The workshop will be held from 4 pm to 8 pm on Monday, May 19th at Sahara Shopping Mall and Thursday May 22nd, 2014 at Arabian Center.
At the same time, a curator from Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization will facilitate a science-themed workshop titled, “The Astrolabe" highlighting ground-breaking discoveries by Arab and Muslim astronomers. Attendees will be introduced to this important astronomical instrument and given the opportunity to create their own Astrolabe.
In a third workshop held on Tuesday May 20th from 4pm to 8 pm at Sahara Shopping Mall
and on Friday May 23 at Arabian Center, an educator from Sharjah Art Museum will boost the attendees aesthetic skills by teaching them to draw a 3D image of the earth's landscape including geographic details such as mountains, trees and man-made landmarks. The aim of the workshop is to increase students’ appreciation of the traditional medium of landscape drawing.
Sharjah Museums Department will conclude its celebration of International Museum Day with a workshop titled “Al Mahatta before the discovery of oil.”
The workshop will be led by an educator from Al Mahatta Museum on Wednesday, May 21st, at Sahara Shopping Mall on Saturday May 24 at Arabian Center, from 4pm to 8 pm with the purpose of introducing guests to Al Mahatta’s historic significance as the first operational airport in the UAE. Visiting children and their families will get the chance to paint a cement model of the Hanno Plane, the first aircraft to land on the airport’s tarmac back in 1932.
