Unemployment in the Middle East at 14 percent
A recently published study estimates the rate of unemployment in the Arab world to stand at 14.3 percent of the total labor force, estimated to be 90-million strong. According to UAE-based Al-Bayan daily, the study was prepared by the Diplomatic Center for Strategic Studies in Kuwait.
Several factors were cited for the rising unemployment levels, the chief being difficulties resulting from economic reforms, cutbacks in public spending, inefficient education systems, lack of consistency between the forces of supply and demand in the labor markets and the continuous influx of foreign workers.
The study estimated that the number of persons seeking employment in the Arab world by the year 2010 would reach 32 million. ― (MENA Report)
