USAID sends additional $1.9 million in relief supplies to western Sudan
The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) airlifted an additional $1,941,150 in relief supplies to Darfur in western Sudan. Plastic sheeting, used for shelter, along with blankets and water purification systems were included in five airlifts that left Dubai and arrived in Nyala between June 5, 2004, and June 14, 2004.
This amount is in addition to the five USAID airlifts in late May that contained supplies including enough plastic sheeting to provide shelter for nearly 160,000 people. To date, the USAID contribution of airlifted relief items for Darfur is 5,790 rolls of plastic sheeting, 97,500 blankets, two water purification systems, and 600 water containers.
The latest airlifts included 40,000 blankets, two water purification systems and 1,890 rolls of plastic sheeting, which will provide enough shelter for 119,070 people. These airlifts are part of the United States' response to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Darfur.
During the recent Sudan donor conference in Geneva, Switzerland, USAID Administrator Andrew S. Natsios stated that, "without proper resources, access, and security, particularly during the current rainy season, at least 320,000 Sudanese will die from hunger and disease. The grave situation that has unfolded in western Sudan in recent months is indeed the worst humanitarian crisis in the world at this time," said Administrator Natsios.
The United States has been an active participant in improving the situation in Darfur by providing nearly $100 million in humanitarian assistance since February 2003. On June 3, 2004, the U.S. government pledged an additional $188.5 million for Darfur through the end of 2005. This amount will bring the total U.S. contribution for Darfur since February 2003 to nearly $300 million. (menareport.com)
