Russia to block UN resolution that will send Syria to ICC
A top Russian official told reporters Tuesday that Moscow would veto any UN resolution that would refer Syria to the International Criminal Court, according to Reuters.
Interfax news agency quoted Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov responding to France's draft resolution that seeks to send Damascus to the ICC for war crimes as "unacceptable to [Russia]."
"The draft that has been submitted to the UN Security Council is unacceptable to us, and we will not support it," Gatilov was quoted as saying in the Reuters report . "If it is put to a vote, we will veto it."
Russia, an ally of Damascus, has previously vetoed three resolutions on Syria in the UN that would have condemned Syrian president Bashar Al Assad's government, threatened sanctions as well as "war crimes accountability."
