What a drag! Beirut air authorities put out naked smoking ban protest
Streak for your rights: smoking ban in Lebanon is distinctly unpopular.
The latest in a streak of ladies to protest naked, one Ukrainian woman has gone nude at Beirut’s airport to make her statement about the country’s smoking ban.
The female traveller caused more than a few stares at the busy terminal on Saturday before she was arrested by airport security at Lebanon's Beirut-Rafic Hariri International Airport.
Restaurants and cafes saw their trade collapse in the aftermath of the ban, leading to the resignation of the head of the country’s restaurant syndicate.
Not usually prone to protest, Lebanese people everywhere took a stand for their right to smoke cigarettes and sheesha when the ban came in to force. Demonstrators in north Lebanon held up a signs reading “Smoking forbidden, kidnapping allowed”, in a snide jab at the country's security forces and government priorities.
After shedding her clothes, the naked Ukranian woman held up a sign calling for an end to the smoking ban. Lebanon was considered a safe haven for smokers, with new rules banning smoking in public places such as hospitals, schools and airports hard to take in for some.
Lighting up in public could now land you a $90 fine, while owners of cafes could be burned by up to $2,700 in penalties.
Should Lebanon's smoking ban stay in place? Will it work for a country so fond of its sheesha? Tell us what you think below.
