Mystery mass expat brawl leaves Dubai police baffled
Dubai's Court of First Instance is set to hear the case.
A mass brawl between 200 men in Dubai ended with one of them being fatally stabbed in the chest, Dubai Court of First Instance heard yesterday.
According to official records, the police received a call about a gang fight in Naif in December between people from Tajikistan and Azerbaijan. Officers were dispatched to the scene, where they found the victim lying in a pool of blood.
A 34-year-old Azerbaijani man appeared before the court yesterday, where he denied murder.
A 39-year-old housewife, also Azerbaijani, said she knew the defendant and he turned up at her home in Muraqabbat out of the blue.
“He told me that he had been involved in a big fight between his friends and the victim’s friends and asked me to help him hand himself in to the police. I took him to the police station,” she said.
“He told me he was holding a knife when the victim attacked him and he accidently stabbed him. The blade stayed in the victim’s chest and he was afraid so he threw away the knife and ran.”
An eyewitness claims that he saw the defendant fleeing the scene of the fight.
“I was driving slowly due to traffic when someone came running and jumped over my car, smashed the window and fled,” he said.
Six other men - a Ukrainian and five men from Azerbaijan - are also on trial, charged with assaulting people during the fight. The trial has been adjourned to hear from the defence and witnesses.
The defendants will remain in custody.
