Dodgy nightclub ID lands Moroccan woman in Dubai jail
An expatriate woman has been jailed for three months for producing an Emirates ID card belonging to someone else when police asked to see her ID card at a nightclub.
Police took away the 31-year-old Moroccan woman, who was facing deportation in a separate case, from the nightclub at a five-star hotel in Jumeirah after she presented an Uzbek woman’s identification documents.
The Dubai Court of First Instance found the defendant, K.L, guilty of using an Uzbek woman’s identification card and impersonating her.
The Moroccan denied the impersonation charge in court. “I am not guilty. I produced the wrong identification cards but it was an unintentional mistake. I am a typist and had other Moroccan women’s IDs. Why would I impersonate an Uzbek? Law enforcement officers fabricated this case against me because I was wanted for deportation,” she said.
The presiding judge asked her: “Why would they fabricate this case against you? Isn’t there a court order to deport you?”
K.L. replied: “It’s true that I presented the wrong ID but it was by mistake. They just wanted to speed up the process of deporting me.”
An Emirati police lieutenant testified that an informant alerted police that the defendant had been spotted repeatedly at the same nightclub.
“There was court judgement to imprison her six months and then deport her. A police patrol headed to the nightclub to arrest her; police officers walked into the club and asked her to step out. When we asked her for some ID, she replied in English and presented an Uzbek woman’s identification. She claimed at the police station that she used the Uzbek’s identification because she was facing a deportation order,” the police officer testified.
Records showed the Moroccan woman admitted that she produced the Uzbek woman’s ID since the latter looked very much like herself.
Monday’s judgement remains subject to appeal within 15 days.
