Made of money? UAE husband divorces wife over $40,000 wedding dress
Things probably weren't meant to be anyway.
A man divorced his wife as he was angry at her for spending more than Dh150,000 (about $40,000) on her a wedding dress instead of using the money to pay for their wedding party.
The man was believed to have proposed to the woman shortly after they got acquainted.
As part of the marriage contract (prior to the wedding party), the man agreed to pay the woman Dh150,000 to spend on the wedding party and its preparations and invitation cards.
After the wedding party, the husband came to know that his wife had a debt of between Dh150,000 and Dh200,000 — money that she had borrowed to pay for the party.
Upon confronting his wife, the latter admitted to her husband that she had spent the Dh150,000 that he gave to her on a white party dress.
Sources close to the case told Gulf News that the husband got very angry and filed for a divorce before a Sharia court.
The outraged husband decided to leave his wife shortly after she confessed to him that she had not informed him prior to the wedding party that relatives and friends had lent her money to cover the expenses.
“The wife was exposed when her lenders asked her to repay the money … the woman had to divulge the bitter truth and she asked him [her husband] to repay her debt as well,” the source said.
The husband was granted divorce.
