From Playboy bunny to... pious Muslim?
This bunny has switched from silky rabbit ears to a modest hijab (Facebook).
Former Playboy bunny Felixia Yeap, from Malaysia, has converted to Islam. She replaced her provocative bunny ears with a modest hijab, declaring herself "reborn".
Yeap is a famous model in Malaysia and has the distinction of being the country's first Playboy bunny. She nevertheless embraced Islam in a ceremony last Thursday which coincided with her 28th birthday. The Daily Mirror reports that Yeap explained that “today is a historic date for me. It's like a rebirth...this date falls on a Thursday, the Prophet Muhammad's favourite day."
Yeap announced her rebirth on Facebook to over 850,000 followers, writing: "I hope everyone will pray that I will be steadfast and committed in my new journey. Only Allah can repay all those who prayed for my new life.” Yeap received over 750,000 likes in response.
According to the Rakyat Post, Yeap has experienced elements of many religions, stating "I went to Catholic Church every Sunday evening for two years. I've tried to understand Christianity...I tried to find new meaning in worshipping Kuan Yin and others. I also tried to adopt Buddhist practices... But my heart never felt close to God. My heart never felt touched."
Yeap appears to have been working towards her conversion for some years. She has been modelling in traditional Muslim garments, including the hijab, for several years and ceased posing for provocative images earlier this year. The Malaysian Star reported that last year Yeap wrote a blog titled "The Truth Behind My Hijab", claiming “I believe I am worth more than just showing off my body. I am more than this." She added that "I don't feel proud if attention- or fame-seeking model wannabes out there look at me as their idol or role model.”
