Posted: 22-10-2008 , 14:16 GMT

BatelcoBatelco Chairman Shaikh Hamad bin Abdulla Al Khalifa and the Governors of Bahrain’s five Governorates have signed an important protocol agreement that will see Batelco fund and provide fully equipped computer labs and free internet to villages throughout the Kingdom of Bahrain.

Batelco is delighted to announce the launch of the ambitious new project under the theme Batelco Live. The project supports the Kingdom’s leading telecommunications company’s ambition to enable internet access for the majority of Bahrain’s residents. It also fully supports Batelco’s philanthropic remit to assist those in the community who need it most.

The project is being fully funded by Batelco and is being implemented with the cooperation of the Kingdom’s five governorates.

Batelco Chairman Shaikh Hamad welcomed the Governors or their representatives to Batelco’s Hamala Headquarters 19th October to sign the agreements and discuss the project details. Attending the event were Governor of the Capital Governorate Shaikh Humood bin Abdulla Al Khalifa, Governor of the Northern Governorate Jaffer Bin Hassan Bin Rajab, Deputy Governor of the Central Governorate Mubarak bin Ahmed Al Fadhel and Mr. Jamal Al Motawa, representing Shaikh Abdulla bin Hamad Al Khalifa the Governor of the Southern Governorate. The Governor of the Muharraq Governorate HE Salman bin Isa bin Hindi who was unable to attend the event, has also signed the agreement.

The Batelco Live project involves the provision of up-to-date computer equipment and software with free high speed broadband connections, in most existing clubs and youth centres located in many of Bahrain’s villages.

“We are delighted to see the results of several months’ research taking shape and look forward to reaching thousands of young Bahrainis who otherwise may not have the opportunity to experience the wonders of the world-wide web,” said Shaikh Hamad.

“The availability of up-to-date technologies, especially ICT has become an acknowledged measure of a nation’s progress and how it is regarded on the world stage.”

The Batelco Live project supports HM King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa’s Schools of the Future project which aims to provide all of Bahrain’s government educational establishments with a linked e-learning educational network.

Batelco also supports the Government of Bahrain in its visionary e-government initiatives which play such a crucial role in maintaining the Kingdom as a premier destination for global investors.

The Governorates unanimously praised Batelco’s generous initiative that will greatly enhance facilities for the residents of their localities, especially those who would otherwise not have access to the educational benefits offered through the huge body of knowledge available on the internet.
