New ”Salman Rushdie” in Italy?
Posted: 31-07-2007 , 10:34 GMT

magdi allamThe Union of Islamic Communities in Italy has urged all Muslims across the country to express their views following a new book which hails Israel and slams Palestinian resistance groups. According to a Saudi newspaper, the leaders of the Islamic community in Italy are furious about the new book which amazingly was edited by an Egyptian-born Italian writer and journalist!

Magdi Allam, 55, deputy chief editor of Italy’s most influential newspaper Il Corriere della Sera, is again at the center of the storm following his seventh book, dubbed “Viva Israele” (Long Live Israel). The subtitle of the book reads “From the ideology of death to the civilization of life: my story.”

“Long Live Israel” is the tale of his life ever since his youth under the republican regime of late Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nasser.

According to Allam, Nasser is responsible for having turned Egypt - and the rest of the Arab world - into the cradle of the "ideology of death". Allam claims Nasser brought about an aggressive pan-Arabic dream based on the denial of Israel’s right to exist.  The need for the destruction of Israel is the dominant theme that, Allam states, made death and destruction the core values of a once liberal Islamic culture.

Thus, the new book defends the existence of Israel and terms armed Palestinian groups as "dangerous terrorist threats." In addition, Allam wrote that during their operations in the Palestinian territories, Israeli forces have been trying to avoid hitting Palestinian civilians and only aim to defend Israeli citizens….

Furthermore, Allam added that the main cause for the Israeli – Palestinian dispute stems form the Palestinian terror.

Allam says that "Israel - along with Pope Benedict XVI - represents the residual hope for Western civilization, which, more than other civilizations, embodies the sacredness of life and personal freedom."

Allam also slams the Arab calls for the killing of Jews. In the past, Allam also criticized resistance groups in Lebanon and Iraq.

Muslims in Italy have been claiming that Allam is an unreliable person who spreads suspicion and hatred against Islam and Muslim people by reporting undocumented, unverified or even utterly false news, just to flatter to the West.

It should be noted that during his adolescent years, Allam maintained completely different views. Allam was raised as a Muslim and attended the Italian school of Cairo. In Italy since 1972, Allam started his stay there as an enthusiastic activist for the Palestinian cause. At that period, Allam thought of Israel as a racist and aggressive state "invented by the Western world as some kind of compensation for the horrors of the Jewish Holocaust".

Years later, his interest in the history of Zionism and a meeting with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat brought him to realize that "Arafat was responsible for Palestinian terrorism" and that "the predication of the ideology of death eventually hit and harmed the Palestinians themselves."

The latest book has changed Allam's life. The Saudi newspaper reported that following threats to his life, the Italian police decided to intensify his security escort. Under these circumstances, it is not surprising that many Muslims in Italy denounce Allam as a new "Salman Rushdie", the British writer who was forced into hiding in the 1990s after Iran's religious leaders issued a fatwa (religious edict), calling for his death.

I have not read his book, but hope he mentioned how the Jews were driven out of nine Arab countries by Arab/Muslim rulers. This is a crime against humanity which needs attention. Nealy one million Jews were driven out of their homes. The authorities confiscated their property and their businesses, hospitals, schools, homes for the aged and other personal property. Nealy all their synagogues are gathering dust and their cemeteries are vandalized and their headstones stolen. Only a handful of Jews remain in the Arab world. In fact, these countries are today the most anti Semitic in the world.

I am not sure that the Arabs wanted the jews out but it was the Israelis who wanted them out, according to the book that was written By the late Israel Shahak; who was a retired Israeli teacher of chemistry who travels the world to lecture on the evils of Zionism and the Jewish religion, he said in one of his books that the Zionists used to pay the jews to leave Iraq and other places, I had an Israeli freind tell me that who would give all what Israel gave him to bring him to Tel Aviv just to go back for one day to Iraq that was back in 1974 when I lived there. So to blame the Arabs and label them as Antisematic is baseless.

Listen Josepf "Abdel Wahed", you are full of sharon. The Jews in many Arab countries (lots of testimonies from Iraq) were driven out by zionist terror acts--false flag operations (burning synagogues) to dribe to "Eretz"and you know it. As for Magdi Allam, if he chooses to be the Arab houseboy in charge of kissing zionist butt, who are we to say he deserves a better fate that to be wiping sharon off his mouth after every Islamophobic statement.

Magdi Allam, as everyone, has his full right to be free to say what he belives, without being frightened to be threatened of death, expecially because his book is based on his experience in Egypt and his knowledge of history. He isn't against Palestinians, Arabs or Muslims and he's Muslim too, also because the major number of victims of ideology of death and of terrorism that abused of Islam, are Arabs and Muslims. The honest Palestinians, Arabs and Muslims should thank Magdi Allam for his activity against terrorism that abuses of the name of Islam.

Whilst not convinced that Mr Allam's views are 100% spot on, I do find it interesting that for a Muslim to denounce terrorism and the destruction of Israel is regarded as being the same as Salman Rushdie's portrayal of Mohammed in teh Satanic Verses. It rather suggests to non-Muslims that you see terrorism and genocide as integral parts of your religion.

It is Torah, the Jewish Holy book that has clear instruction for ethnic cleansing not Koran. Lets read Torah shall we?Torah, the Book Of Numbers, chapter 33 verses 50-53: " "Now the Lord spoke to Moses in the plains of Moab by the Jordan, across from Jericho, saying," Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them :'When you have crossed the Jordan into the land of Canaan, then you shall drive out all the inhabitants of the land from before you, destroy all their engraved stones, destroy all their molded images and demolish all their high places; you shall dispossess the inhabitants of the land and dwell in it,for I have given you the land to posses.'"

As you can see it is this book that has santioned and encouraged the fanatic Jews to steal land from Palestinians, it is this book that is being used to perpetuate this land theft, it is this book that has made the terrorism, ethnic cleansing an integral part of this religion. Jews need to come out and denounce Israeli land theft if they want to be differentiated from these Torah tumping, gun toting land thieves.

Mgad perhaps you would like to define what you mean by the word 'terroristic'. I am only a politics graduate so bow to your superior knowledge but it doesn't seem to be a real word. The definition of terrorism is rather awkward but it usually revolves around the use of violence by non-soldiers ie those that do not wear a recognisbale uniform, bear their arms openly or act in accordance with the laws of armed conflict. You're going to have to try very hard to prove that Israel fits the description of terrorists better than Hamas. Even if you do it doesn't in any way counter my point.

I sincerly am so happy that I don't live in the situation of Palestinian people and I don't know what I would do if I did, but the settlement had place after the war of Six Days because Nasser first of all wanted to destroy Israel. Egypt and Jordan are formally in peace with Israel now, but before making peace Jordan occupied West Bank and Egypt occupied Gaza in 1948 untill 1967... why would nobody resist against that occupation and talked about poor Palestinians?

Acura, if you had read my first comment you'd note that I don't entirely agree with this author. I don't believe that Israel is the land of goodness and light but face reality. 1: Most of the 'atrocities' commited by Israel have little if any basis in fact and often the result of terrorists picking a fight they can never win. 2: Israel is surrounded by neighbours who want to do exactly what you describe to ever man, woman and child in Israel and whose butchery is well documented. If the UK were surrounded by similarly cruel neighbours I doubt we would act with the same restraint the Israelis have. But that ain't the point..

» The point part 2
  James, London, (2007-08-28 , 09:50) - Reply
The point I made which Acura has missed is not particularly subtle. Salman Rushdie was accused of blasphemy for his book 'The Satanic Verses' which attacked the persona of Mohammed. What is interesting is that Allam's views on Palestinian terrorists and Arab desires to commit genocide against the Jews are comparable to Salman Rushdie's. If Allam's views are blasphemous then surely that means the destruction of Israel and terrorism are part of the Islamic religion? That throws up some serious questions about the religion of peace.

Islam is a very fast growing religion, but the fastest? How do you quantify that? There isn't even any agreement as to how many Muslims there are in the world; so how do you define Islam's growth rate accurately? Islam is a fast growing religion because Muslims have a very high birth rate (like Catholics and for the same reasons). Rates of conversion to Islam are insignificant. If you look at a region like the Balkans conversion rates from Islam to Christianity and secularism are actually quite high. I don't see that being mentioned very often.

Why is having a view other than the party line a betrayal? Is Islam really a monolithic entity with no internal debate or shades of disagreement? Of course it isn't. Only an utterly contemptible demagogue would denounce someone as a traitor simply because they have actually given the issue some consideration. And as for your freedom of speech piece - Arab newspapers regularly carry cartoons of Jews wearing swastikas and even depicted Condoleeza Rice pregnant with a monkey. Oh hah hah, she's black.
