The International Atomic Energy Agency has launched an investigation regarding traces of highly enriched uranium it located at an Egyptian nuclear research facility, according to Reuters.
On its part, the Egyptian authorities have explained that the material “could have been brought into the country through contaminated radioisotope transport containers,” the Reuters report said. The Presidint of Egyptian Atomic Energy Authority Dr. Mohammed Taha al Qalali said Thursday that Egypt has not been involved in enrichment activities. According to him, Egypt respects all the international accords in this regard and fully cooperates with the U.N.'s International Atomic Energy Agency.
The Egyptian official added that U.N. nuclear experts who visited Cairo last month hailed its cooperation with the international watchdog.
