Two Kuwaiti television stations said on Wednesday that the opposition-dominated parliament had been dissolved amid a bitter political crisis. Al-Watan and Al-Rai quoted unnamed government sources as saying a decision had been taken to dissolve parliament and a call made for early elections.
According to AFP, Islamist MP Nasser al-Sane told reporters outside parliament: "We have heard that parliament has been dissolved constitutionally."
The country's emir, Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah, has taken the decision. Earlier on Wednesday, he summoned parliament speaker Jassem al-Khorafi for a meeting as part of consultations aimed at settling a standoff between MPs and the cabinet, which stepped down on Monday. © 2008 Al Bawaba (www.albawaba.com)
