Posted: 16-06-2009 , 20:00 GMT

A Libyan health official reported that one person has died and two others were infected with the bubonic plague in the eastern town of Tobruk, not far from the Egyptian border. According to the AP, Dr. Abdel Hafez Abu Thuhair said Tuesday that the two were treated and sent home. The one fatality died June 10.

There was also a suspected Egyptian case who had crossed into Egypt before he could be tested, added the Abu Thuhair. According to him, the disease is transmitted by infected fleas and not contagious between humans.
