Israeli foreign ministry officials on Friday said the government of Mauritania expelled the Israeli ambassador and his staff from the country. The move comes weeks after Mauritania recalled its own ambassador from Tel Aviv. Earlier this year, Mauritania said it was suspending ties with Israel over the fighting in Gaza.

The AP reported from the Mauritanian capital of Nouakchott that the embassy was closed.
