Report: US$3.5 billion withdrawn by Syrian officials from Lebanese banks
Posted: 27-02-2005 , 13:41 GMT

The political turmoil in Lebanon, following the assassination of ex-Premier Hariri, is taking its toll also on the economy. Lebanon-syria-hariri

Hariri was the mastermind of the Paris Two accords in 2002 that averted a sovereign debt default in Lebanon. He was also the controlling shareholder in Solidiere, the development company that rebuilt downtown Beirut. On the top of this, Hariri provided the credible economic leadership for a decade that enabled the country to lure private capital from the Arab world, estimated at some 11 per cent of GDP.

According to Khaleej Times, as the political crisis erupted the Central Bank of Lebanon (CBL)'s Governor Riyad Salameh has ordered to intervene massively in the foreign exchange market in order to avoid the collapse of the Lebanese pound.

However, it seems that the growing opposition to the Syrian presence in Lebanon may pose another threat to the stability of the Lebanese economy. According to the Kuwaiti Al Siyasa newspaper, Syrians, including senior officials, have withdrawn recently some US$3.5 billion deposited in Lebanese banks. One bank owner told the newspaper that out of US$10 billion held in Lebanese banks by Syrian officials, senior officers and businessmen, some $3.5 was withdrawn in recent days. According to him, the CBL has ordered not to publish this information in fear that the local economy will collapse.

It should be mentioned that over 1 million Syrian workers are currently employed in Lebanon. The bulk of their income is sent it to their families in Syria. Syrian workers remit around over $4.0 billion from Lebanon to Syria every year.

Simply put the Lebanese have been played by the double hydra of Isreal and AmuriKKKa. They divide and conqueor. Osama is laughing alllllllllllllllllllll the way to the bank. Syria is right to withdraw their money from an ungrateful Lebanon. All that is left to protect Lebanon is Hisbollah God helpthe people in the Middle East. This problemwas caused by a UN that broke the law of nature and stole land. Mother nature will sort things out. Stop the killing Isreal. You have WMD's and you are treasonous spies.Save Darfur and end the genocide of HUMANS.

C'mon, Syria! Let Lebanon stand on its own. You have done lots of good for it, stabilized the region, stopped the random violence, and promoted prosperity in the region. Now it is time for you as an older brother to step back. Let Lebanon take its first steps as a fully sovereign nation. Kill two birds with one stone: Show us Americans that you always meant to withdraw, that you're not going to do it out of pressure, and show the Lebanese people that you are ready to stand along them, as they pursue their goals and dreams.

How grateful should the lebanese be? You think Syria is capable to defend us from Israel? or Hezballah if they really wish to take us out?! Typical arab mentality thinking we amount to something when in truth we are 500 years behind the rest of the world.

your report and its source on syrian withdrawal of money from lebanese banks is doubtful. also, where do you get your data that syrian workers are 1 mill. in lebanon. lebanese govet data estimates them to be 300,000, blue collar laborers. so how can they generate $1 bill. an dsend it back to syria. raghib fucking Alamaeh makes in one sininging h=night in syrian clubs what the whole syrian lot will make in one year in lebono. so give us a fucking break.
