Mitchell in Damascus: Syria has pivotal role

mitchell assadSyrian President Bashar al-Assad discussed Saturday morning with U.S. Envoy to the Middle East, George Mitchell, prospects of peace and the situation in the region. According to SANA news agency, al-Assad was briefed on the outcome of Mitchell's tour in the region and on the American vision of the peace process. Mitchel underlined Obama Aministration's commitment to the establishment of comprehensive peace in the region, the agency added.

 

"The two sides agreed that the problems in the region are interlaced and that progress in finding solution to any problem will contribute to pushing other issues in a positive direction," it went on to say.

 

The two sides expressed desire for the establishment of normal Syrian-American relations catering the interests of the peoples of both countries.

 

Speaking to the press following the talks, Mitchell said he held essential talks with al-Assad on a host of serious issues and on bilateral relations, expressing desire for building on these efforts to establish a relation based on mutual respect and mutual interests , looking forward to continue dialogue with Syria.

 

The American envoy underlined  Syria's pivotal role in reaching comprehensive peace in the region , adding that the United States is committed to hard  work for the establishment of comprehensive peace in the Middle East , and that the US. President and Secretary of State have already announced that Washington will work for the establishment of peace between Israel and each of Syria, Lebanon , and the Palestinians.

 

Mitchell stated: "The peace which we are seeking  to achieve is in fact a comprehensive peace , and we are well aware of the many difficulties that stand in our way, yet we share the commitment to create the proper conditions for the immediate resumption of the negotiations for a successful end."

 

He indicated that supporting these efforts by a substantial steps will be in  the interest  of all who seek peace from the Americans, the Europeans , the Arabs and Israelis.
