Posted: 08-09-2009 , 19:19 GMT

Walid MuallemSyria's Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem met on Tuesday with Spanish counterpart Miguel Angel Moratinos. The two sides exchanged viewpoints regarding developments in the Middle East, particularly in Iraq, the occupied Palestinian territories, and the peace process.

According to the state-run SANA news agency, al-Moallem noted the obstacles posed by Israel to achieving peace, stressing the need for the international community to pressure Israel to comply with the requirements of just and comprehensive peace based on resolutions of international legitimacy and the principle of land for peace.

Regarding Iraq, he affirmed Damascus' commitment to the unity, independence, security and stability of Iraq, reiterating Syria's "stern condemnation of the terrorist bombings that took place in Baghdad and claimed the lives of many Iraqis."
