ehs conducts public awareness campaign on the preservation of the ozone layer

Special programme in Ibn Battuta Mall includes several activities and competitions

EHS, the Environment, Health and Safety regulatory arm of Dubai World, today organised an awareness campaign aimed at educating people on the environment, particularly the harmful effects of ozone depletion.

As part of the awareness drive, held to mark the International Day for the Protection of the Ozone Layer, EHS organized a special programme in Dubai’s Ibn Battuta Mall, where shoppers were asked questions about the environment, ozone depletion and ways to guard against it, with electronics devices and other gifts as prizes for the correct answers.

There was also a special colouring area set up for children to colour pictures with emphasis on the environment and the earth, and presenters from Decision Makers TV conducted the evening.

Ahmed Abdul Hussein, CEO, EHS, said:
"EHS is dedicated to promoting awareness and educational campaigns in various fields of Environment, Health and Safety, which stems from Dubai World's commitment to its corporate social responsibility, and our core belief that education is the key to preserving our environment.”

“This time, our campaign sheds the light on yet another significant environmental issue: the ozone layer, which has aroused widespread concern all over the world due to the serious hazards this issue poses to all live beings," Mr. Ahmed Abdul Hussain said.

Mr. Hussain emphasized the need for all citizens to cooperate with the efforts exerted to control pollution, taking into consideration that this is the primary criterion which may contribute largely to the success of this environmental issue and lessen the adverse consequences on the environment and nature.

To increase the public awareness about ozone-friendly products, encourage the use of substitutes to environmentally-harmful products and draw attention to the significance of preserving the ozone layer through effecting changes to the daily routines and activities including the distribution of plants to all sister companies within Dubai World. EHS will also promote awareness on the importance of plants by distributing the endangered "Ghaf" tree, a specious indigenous to the UAE and has long been embedded in the UAE culture and tradition.

The UAE is signatory to "Vienna Convention on the Protection of the Ozone Layer" and "Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer" since December, 1989, which holds evidence to the UAE's constant support of the environmental issues on all national, regional and international levels.
