Building This great pyramid in Giza, Egypt took more than 20 years, and it used over 2 million huge blocks of stone... The great Pyramid of Khufu is made of limestone and is the same color as the sand and rock of the desert around it. There are no trees or other plants it is just dry, open spaces. The pyramid soars to 137 meters above this – about as high as a forty –storey modern skyscraper. A total of 2,300,000 blocks of stone, weighing between 2.5 and 5 tones each, were used to build this great pyramid which is still the biggest stone building in the world. Assuming that the pyramid was completed during Khufu’s twenty –three year reign, this means that some 100,000 of these huge blocks of stone had to be prepared and put into position each year – or 273 stones everyday !
