The Ancient City of Pompeii
Posted: 24-01-2006 , 11:10 GMT

The Roman city of Pompeii was damaged by an earthquake in 63 AD. Sixteen years later, volcano Vesuvius erupted and covered the city with ash and mud. Two thousand people died, but the ash and mud formed a solid rock case around their bodies. Although the bodies themselves turned to dust, the ash and mud left perfect moulds of the people’s shapes.

The city of Pompeii remained buried for more than 1500 years. The ash not only preserved bodies, but also buildings, temples, theaters, baths, shops, homes and many objects giving us a complete picture of life in an ancient Roman City.
