The rock of the Acropolis with its collection of magnificent monuments was the site of one of the first settlements. It slowly changed from a fortified citadel
to the heart of the first city-state.
The Parthenon temple was built on the Acropolis in 447- 431 BC. It was dedicated to Athene, the guardian goddess of the city.
