In 490 BC, and at a place called marathon, an important battle took place between the Greeks and the Persians. The Greeks won, and one of their soldiers ran almost 40 km (25 miles) all the way from Marathon to Athens. He gave the Athenians the good news and then dropped dead. Today, in memory of this, the Marathon races run on open roads over a distance of 42 km (26 miles).
