The peoples of the ancient World, especially the Romans, used the plate. But it disappeared during the middle ages and was replaced by bowls and wooden trenchers.

Plates reappeared again in 1530, in silver, at the banquet celebrating the marriage of King Francis I of France (1494-1547) to Eleanor Habsburg.
