ðWhat is a Volcano?
Posted: 24-01-2006 , 11:10 GMT

A volcano is an opening in the Earth’s crust. The mouth of a volcano is called a crater. When a volcano erupts, hot melted rocks (molten lava) from inside the Earth pour out of the opening. Volcanoes that erupt often are called active. One that has stopped erupting is said to be extinct, while those that might still erupt some time in the future are said to be dormant.

There are around 1300 active volcanoes around the world. Most are found near the edges of the plates, which make up the Earth’s outer layers.

A mountain with hiccups!
