
Icebergs are huge pieces of ice that have broken off from glaciers in polar regions. Icebergs are most common in Spring when the ice is melting.
Icebergs are much larger than they look because only 1/8 of them can be seen above the surface of the water. Which means that as much as seven times that amount is under the water. The saying "the tip of the iceberg" accurately describes this. The largest icebergs can be the size of a small island.
Icebergs in the Arctic Ocean are usually pyramid shaped. In the Antarctic Ocean they tend to be flat on top.
