When a flower grows on a plant one part of it is like a small box. You can usually see it as a swelling at the top of the stem. This small box contains the plant’s future seeds. The top of the small seed box may have a small piece, the stigma, sticking up from it to catch pollen.
Pollen is a fine powder made in a small box-like containers, anthers, on the ends of thin stalks called stamens. When they are ripe, these pollen boxes become either yellow or almost black. If you touch them gently with your finger pollen comes out. Now this pollen must get to the top of the seed box. It is better if the pollen of one flower goes to the seed box of another flower, provided they are of the same kind. And this is where insects help. When they visit a flower they get pollen on their legs and body. They carry this pollen with them when they visit another flower brushing it on to the top of its seed box. © 2005 Al Bawaba (www.albawaba.com) |
