A safety pin is something you use to fasten cloth diapers. It was invented in 1849 by a mechanic from New York called Walter Hunt. While trying to think of a way to pay a $15 debt Hunt was twisted a piece of wire and invented the safety pin!

Thinking this was not a great inventions, Walter Hunt soon sold the patent for four hundred dollars. Hunt is also known for many other inventions including America's first sewing machine.
