People make waste, and waste pollutes unless it is dealt with properly. Sludge plants use air bubbles to speed up the natural breakdown of human waste by micro-organisms.

Bacteria added to the waste consume the unwanted solids, leaving a scum that settles to the bottom. The remaining water can then be safely returned to a river.
