The first model of a mechanical dishwasher was developed between 1850 and 1865 in the United States. However, it was not until 1886 that Josephine Cochrane came up with an efficient design for a dishwasher. She did it because she wanted to lower the number of plates her servants broke!
The electrically powered dishwasher first appeared in 1912. The automatic dishwasher first appeared in the United States in 1940, but was not exported to Europe until 1960.
