Water polo started in England over a hundred years ago. It was first introduced as an Olympic sport in 1900. Nobody knows how it got its name; real polo is a game played on horseback. Maybe it should have been called Water handball.
Both men and women can play water polo. There are seven players in each team, but if you want to play it for fun, then the number of players does not matter. The idea of the game is to score goals with a ball a lot like a small basketball. The goals are like small football goals, and they are placed at either end of the pool.© 2006 Al Bawaba (www.albawaba.com) |
