In the early 1800s tin cans were invented to preserve food in a sealed container. These cans allowed the food to be transported easily.
Tin cans had many benefits; the only problem was they were very hard to open! At first people used a hammer and chisel, but this idea did not work well. Later a few other dangerous devices were used.
In the 1930's the first tin can opener with gears was introduced. It is very strange that people had to wait more than 100 years after the first tin can was invented for the first can opener to appear!
