
William Morgan was born in New York and studied at Springfield College, Massachusetts. Later Morgan became the Director of Physical Education at the Holyoke, Massachusetts, YMCA (Young Men's Christian Association).
At Springfield College Morgan met James Naismith, basketball inventor, and was inspired to invent volleyball in 1985. The game was first called Mintonette.
After a demonstration game It was renamed volleyball when one of the spectators commented that this sport involved much "volleying"!
