A 150-member Israeli aid delegation canceled its mission to Sri Lanka on Tuesday, after the country - one of the hardest hit in the Asian tsunami disaster - refused to accept the Israeli team, Israel military officials said.
However, Israel is dispatching supplies at Sri Lanka's request, including 10,000 blankets contributed by the Israeli army, tents, nylon sheeting and water containers. The Israeli army's Home Front Command is organizing aid preparations.
Meanwhile, the Israeli humanitarian organization Latet ("To give") is sending a separate aid package Tuesday. It is filling a jumbo jet with 18 tons of supplies worth $50,000, at Sri Lanka's request.
The relief team that had been expected to depart for Sri Lanka on Tuesday included medical teams and representatives of the Israeli army and Defense Ministry.
The delegation was planning to assemble a medical facility comprised of specialist doctors, and to set up emergency, internal medicine and pediatric departments, as well as laboratory and X-ray facilities in the southern part of Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka, alomg with several other areas was devastated by a natural calamity. To refuse help from any well intentiomed source is suicide. I would like to hear the reasons for the refusal, and especialy from the those immediately affected. It reminds me of a short srory a read in high school about a drowning person who refused the outstretched hand of a black man. But that was only a story.

As a matter of fact, Israel is the MAJOR contributor to the Palestinian Authority, both in materials and in cash. That's on top of allowing PA residents to work in Israel without paying certain taxes, and even when homicide bombers and other terrorists smuggle themselves in as "workers." Not to mention that Israel is constantly having to "forgive" unpaid phone bills, electric bills, etc., of the PA "governmental" authorities.

Under the tragic circumstances a freindly nation like Sri Lanka is passing through, I feel ashamed of the little or no help from wealthy Arab nations contributed to Sri Lanka
This is the time for the world to pull together, not drift farther apart. I encourage all affected countries to accept whatever generous help they are offered. People's lives are at stake. It's not about religion, it's about humanity.
This story is innacurate. The fact is that the plan originally called for a delegation of 150 people, including doctors, IDF rescue workers and journalists, to fly there as well, but this idea was shelved when the government in Sri Lanka informed the Israeli Foreign Ministry that it does not have the wherewithal to logistically provide for all the aid workers pouring into the devastated country from around the world.
Sri Lanka and Israel have had diplomatic relations since 2000, with Sri Lanka represented by an ambassador in Tel Aviv, and Israel represented in Sri Lanka by its ambassador in New Delhi.
Perhaps Al Bawaba could remove this misleading headline.

even in the face of the insult of having Israel's medical aid team refused. sri lanka did apparently allow a small convoy of rescue workers to accompany the supplies. I challenge any Arabs and Muslims who so despise Jews and the Jewish nation to step up and donate their own money and supplies, instead of wasting their time and energy poisoning the world with hateful words. I was in Sri Lanka helping with the relief effort. And I met a few teams from Israel. So this new report is not accurate. Sri Lanka has always been neutral in the middle east. Sri Lanka does have a big muslim population, but the government has coducted themselves in a secular and unbiased fashion when it comes to the middle easy politics.
